Perceys got off to their usual poor start when they went down to a decent Sparkys team, marshalled by old warhorse Barry Hayward. A tight and finely balanced 1st half was turned on its head when Perceys shipped some needless goals in the 2nd half.
Perceys, missing Faulkner, Eaton and Murray actually started the game well and were applying early pressure to Sparky’s, gradually probing and coming close to scoring, especially on a couple of occasions when Scales hit the post and Cocksy shook off his close-season pron-fest slumber to have near efforts fouled.
But Perceys would live to regret those misses when lost possession on the edge of the Sparky’s penalty area saw a long ball played and the player hit the ball past keeper, Holding.
This was the last kick of the half and the goal fired Sparkys and demoralised Perceys, especially when a bit of bad fortune saw the otherwise excellent Car-Park fluff a shot through his hands and legs a la David James.
Perceys tried to push forward but were hit by a further goal, but a great move saw Perceys pull a goal back from Cocks. However, two late goals saw any hopes of a comeback fade and so keep up Perceys traditional losing habit on the opening day.
