We came, we saw, we conquered.. And so ends the saga of the inaugural Torbay Bookies 5-a-side tournament.
A select Stanley team (and by ‘select’ I mean ‘the only buggers prepared to play’) were victorious against times representing the might of William Hill and Ladbrokes, as well as local boys Gee and Gee, with new boys Jennings also putting up a side.
Our first game was a thrilling 3-3 draw with fancied ladbrokes – a late equaliser providing us with the platform to start our assault on the title. Next up, were Jennings, who proved stiff opposition, (and who also clattered yours truly into the wall) and that game ended 2 each.
Our 3rd game, against Gee and Gees, provided us with our first and (as it turned out) biggest win. 5-1 to the Stanley boys, and not a goal conceded. Perhaps I should explain that last comment. I got asked to go in goal, and being only too keen to help the team, duly obliged. I was doing really well, even sustaining a hit to the knackers (eeek!) when a high ball went behind me. I turned to catch it but sadly it hit me and went in. Whoops. A bit of comedy from me then.
The final game of the round robin stages pitted us against arch-rival Hills, and we knew that only a win would see us into the final. We quickly found ourselves a goal down, due to a slight defensive cock-up. But you’ll be please to know that the Stanley boys didn’t lie down, oh-ho no. We stormed back to 2-2 before a goal of rare quality from a man of limited talent but unbounded enthusiasm (me!) put us within grasp of the final.
Despite a late rally from the hills boys, which saw a penalty appeal controversially turned down, we managed to seal the 4-2 win in the dying seconds with a sweeping end-to-end move. And so on we marched!
The final. Ladbrokes vs Stanleys. 10 men, 1 ball, no talent, a point to prove. to cut a long story short…we only went and bloody won!! 2-1, woohoo! So, we lifted the trophy, tired but proud warriors, and each of got a little medal to take home and put in the trophy cabinet. (speaking for myself, I only had a pool league winners trophy before that)
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and even though I didnt really expect to win, I am really looking forward to gloating for the next 6 months. When, we shall get asked to defend our title. Oh dear.
I shall put a photo of the victorious team up on here shortly. Can’t wait, can you?
